Richard Moore
THE PETULANT YOGI
1
The basic practice? It's as simple
as, when you smile, to make a dimple.
2
Lie on the floor; relax there, palms up,
before supper; and when you're calm, sup.
3
You say you cannot do this? Well,
then never mind, sir. Stay in Hell.
4
Passive is active; active, passive.
Mass is mere thought, and mere thought, massive.
5
In this lost world, the way that's wise is
stupidity: give up disguises.
ON HAVING FAITH IN THE FUTURE
I'll praise his rubbish to the skies.
Time will obliterate our lies.
WE ALL HAVE OUR LITTLE WEAKNESSES
They say His Holiness, the Pope's
fond of perfumes and fragrant soaps.
Then shall we say the Pope is sordid
or he who got that dirt recorded?
TO A FLATTERING OBSERVER
Eager they flocked to my name,
rapt their attention, you say?
Don't ask the ones who came.
Ask those who stayed away.
POLITICIANS
That crowd of monkeys, aping thinkers,
seizing the social balance, tinkers.
Unseemly, the result. How raucus is
the people's voice! Silence it, caucuses!
WE MODERNS
Is carelessness carefree? Ours hints a deeper sorrow:
that from the present's ample bank, thoughtless, we borrow,
as if we thought the world were going to end tomorrow.
